Default What is spirituality and how is it different from religion?

I often hear people in recovery and rehab say they believe in spirituality but not religion. Isn't religion spiritual? Why for instance is spirituality encouraged but religion is not?

Welcome to ODR James....I suppose it depends who you're asking whether spirituality or religion is encourage. And one's own spirituality is very much an individual issue.
For me....spirituality is the belief in a Power of entity beyond our own reasoning ability. A belief that causes 2 people to fall in love, a baby to nurse from it's mother, a bee attracted to a flower, watching your child be born..and the list goes on. My own religion incorporates the spirituality with a communion of those with the same or similar beliefs. Beliefs that encapsulate morality with which that desire or quest should be fulfilled by the action or its consequences or which undesired consequences should be prevented. The goal of an action from the standpoint of a community to which the individual belongs. In such cases the goal of the action or practice has also to do at least indirectly with fulfillment of desires of the individuals which constitute that specific society, or religion. A format to openly share and express those beliefs.....and a continued quest to understand that which may very well be beyond the realm of our understanding....or explaination.

Albert Einstein: "My religiosity consists in a humble admiration of the infinitely superior spirit that reveals itself in the little that we, with our weak and transitory understanding, can comprehend of reality. Morality is of the highest importance-but for us, not for God."

    Godspeed in your quest.

here's my feeble take on your question:
to me, religion conjures up notions of organization, church going, and believing in a specific dogma that 'church' dictates. Many folks in recovery gravitate back to a church of their origin, or a new church for a better fit.

I did neither...though I tried anything. Spirituality is an experience outside the dictates of an organized religion for me. Spirituality promotes the idea (to me) that I can believe in anything I want....any Power I want....anything that resonates with me as a Higher Power. and, I choose to practice this spirituality in any (or all) modalities of my own choosing.

either way...seeking a Power greater than ourselves....gets me outta my own head and negates my need to rule my own life. When I can align my Spirit and my will with a Higher Power, life takes on new meaning and purpose.

sheesh...its really impossible to describe such matters, no?

Not for this chic... religion is man made rules and expectation. Spiritual for me.. is my inner self. That voice in my head that roars when I am not doing the right thing and comfortable and at peace when I am.

Religion in my eyes is to separate one from another, spiritual is to bring one self together.
omission is not honesty, only a different way of lying.

In a nutshell, to me it's sorta like the difference between a house and a home.

**A house is the physical structure, an address on a street to identify it.(religion)

**A home is what's on the inside of the house...the emotional give and take of family, something you can't actually see with your physical eyes. (spirituality)

    Another way to put it;
Spiritual people all believe in basically the same thing..a higher power, an unseen force,
Religious people follow a set of traditions and rituals according to the religion/church they belong to and identify with.

Yes Sluggo this IS hard to put into words!

I like what Bonita said. This is a good way to put it.

Some 20 years ago, I remember hearing an oldtimer at an AA meeting saying that "Religion is for people who are afraid to go to hell and spirituality is for those who have been there and don't want to go back". Still not sure if I know what he meant, but it sorta hit home for some reason.

I would like to see other's explanations of the difference between religion and spirituality. Come On members! Anyone care to give it a go?

Religion is basically the act of trying to comply with a lot of rules and regulations, rituals, etc, while relying on yourself for the most part, as the Pharisees were doing in the Old Testament. When I decided to trust the son the living God as my source of everything back in May, and sincerely meant it, I recieved the Holy Spirit of God by verbally asking for it. It's not something that you harness and box and bow. It is God himself living in you, and as we're told, leads you into all truth and convicts us of our sins. If you are obediant to Him, you wont have to really "try" to be all these things, because He will never lead you into sin. Doesn't mean you'll never sin, because we all fall short of His glory at times. But when I do, I think a lot about David, who did all kinds of dark sins, but he always got back up and repented to right standing and moved forward. All those Biblical folks who did all those seemingly impossible things were simply people, just like us, being obediant to and trusting the Holy spirit's guidance! "Without faith, it is impossible to please God."

The way I define the terms asked about:
"Religion" is man-made ways or paths or rules to try and reach God....
"Spirituality" is a catch-all term for any number of things on a sliding scale from rules to "my own inner experience"
What I have, and what true Christianity is as defined by the Bible, is a "Relationship" with God, through His Son Jesus Christ, where God reached down to me and revealed His path to Himself. Completely different from "religion" as that is man-made attempts to reach God; and much more specific than the term "spiritual". Just my opinions folks.
