Children of Chaos

Over the years, every conceivable deviation from our Twelve Steps
and Twelve Traditions have been tried. That was sure to be,
since we are so largely a band of ego-driven individuals.
Children of chaos, we have defiantly played with every brand of fire,
only to emerge unharmed and, we think, wiser.
These very deviations created a vast process of trial and error
which, under the grace of God, has brought us to where we stand today.

Focus


Getting into the present centers me.
I've come to believe that God is taking care of me.
The relief was swift as I realized I only had to get through the next hour,
half-hour, or even ten minutes.

Letting Go

I'm beginning to see that letting go doesn't mean giving up.
It means opening myself to new vistas.
There have been moments of what I would call ecstasy.
I'm thrilled and scared at the same time.
I feel, "I'd better not enjoy this because it is going to go away.". . .
The AA program says, "Look, we've got some things to give you
that are really going to help -- if you'll slow down long enough and if you'll relax."

Perfection

There would be no music if high C were the only note,
no art if spectrum red were the only color,
no joy in pleasure if pleasure were the only feeling --
and, paradoxically, there would be no perfection without imperfection.
What does this mean to me? Well, first it means that I don't have to be perfect.
All I have to do is grow at a pace natural to me.

Willingness

It was only a matter of being willing to believe in a Power greater than myself.
Nothing more was required of me to make my beginning.
I saw that growth could start from that point.

Time

I find that we don't just "get somewhere" -- we go there, one day at a time. . .
And what is time to me now? It is a most precious asset.
I have the luxury of being able to cherish the memory of yesterday,
to live today with serenity, to wait for tomorrow. . .
And I am grateful; grateful for the existence of AA;
grateful to my God for leading me to the doors of AA and to Himself,
grateful for hope. I am grateful for this minute.
My eternity may be in it.

Acceptance


AA has filled my days with friends, laughter, growth, and the feeling of worth . . .
I am free to laugh all my laughter, free to trust and be trusted,

I have accepted the gift of a safer, happier journey through life.

Fundamental


One of the most fundamental things I have learned
is to pass on our message to other alcoholics.
That meant I must think more about others than about myself.
The most important thing is to practice these principles in all my affairs.
In my opinion, that is what Alcoholics Anonymous is all about.

Fantasy


The more I drank, the more I fantasized everything.
I imagined getting even for hurts and rejections. In my mind's eye
I played and replayed scenes in which I was plucked magically from the bar
where I stood nursing a drink and was instantly exalted
to some position of power and prestige. I lived in a dream world.
AA led me gently from this fantasizing to embrace reality with open arms.
And I found it beautiful! For, at last, I was at peace with myself.
And with others. And with God.
