Hi, just thought Id share with you my experiences with methadone. Both I and my partner did a methadone taper, I did it detox style, and my partner did a MMT with the aim of getting off sooner than later (i.e. not be on it for years, but months). Please check out my thread - there's no need to read it all just the first few pages cos you may find it very helpful. I was very scared about cutting doses in half, and getting from 120mls/mg a day to 5mls/mg a day in only days, although it worked! My problem was when I got to 5mls/mg I couldnt do the final jump. Many could argue this was more so a mental thing than a physical issue, although however you look at it it was hard, on a physical level. But having hindsight I would recommend a quick taper at high doses, although perhaps level out when you get to the low doses and either do one thing or the other - which is jump straight away (cos it'll hurt anyways) or slow it down so its less painful (but youll be on it longer obviously). Everyone is different, so do whats best for you, but please check out my thread: Detox with methadone
I wish you all the best.

    Shar.

p.s - If you cant be assed reading the thread, Id be happy to help you with any questions you may have.

Thanks so much to everyone for the advice and thoughtfulness to reply. I know how busy most of our lives are so for someone to take the time to give encouragement and help, means the world to me.
I live in a state of constant fear that at some point, if I lose my job or become otherwise unable to afford the clinic, that I will go through hell on earth.
And I don't want to feel like this for the rest of my life.
I start going down 5mg per week on Monday.
My counselor said he'll be with me every step of the way and seems genuinely committed to seeing me get off methadone ...we shall see ..
I'll keep posting as I go down and become free again!

I think the longer you wait the harder it is physically. when methadone did for me(the one good thing) is it finally got my mind off useing on the streets and useing needles. it took me alot of time to not search for that rush or getting the drugs and shooting up. methadone wasnt instant gratifacation for me. it took time and i hardly got the instant rush and itch that i was getting useing heroin via shooting up. i stayed on methadone for a long time till my head was straight and i didnt want or need that. then i dropped off. got 4 months almost now clean from methadone or any drug(except some alcohol). its a mental struggle with addiction too. so basically methadone helped me with the mental part. but i was on for way to long and got way to high of a dose. my opinion is if your mental state is good then try to get off soon. if your head is still in a bad place still taper, but see a counsler maybe out side the clinic unless you have a good one provided by the clinic. good luck.

Ok today is my first day of slow taper
    I went from 95 to 90.
    Next week will be 85.
The clinic insists on 5 mg increment drops per week until you hit 20. Then its 3 until done.

The clinic might not be right about much, but this, they are right about. You don't want to go faster, unless you love pain, and suffering. Sure you COULD do it faster, if speed of getting off is your goal, but if you don't want a painful, painful, detox, you should be more concerned about it working ,than the speed at which you get off. SORRY, but their is no way to do this quickly, without lots, and lots of pain, including many sleepless nights. If you listen to nothing else your clinic tells you , they are right, in telling you you shouldn't go down faster. It's all the other delays, that can be frustrating. Tuesday, April 26, 2011 will be my last day going to a clinic, after 15 years of treatment. During the last 13 years, other than Methadone, I've been Opiate free. I intend on staying that way after I detox myself the last 3 mgs. on my own, with the extra Methadone I have, from all the times I forgot to dose. Learn from others who have been, where you are now. Follow those who have done this with success. Good luck, you can do it, just don't try and do it too fast.

    Hey buddy, Cool handle!
I'm new here, just signed up matter of fact and the first forum I check into is someone with the name I was so proud that I'd coined. HA!!
I suppose had I not used the apostrophe it would've told me it was in use??
I remember the "great deal of shame" I told a friend of mine I felt the first time I realized I was going to withdrawl.
Now, 4.5 years later, 2 of which on methadone, I'm kicking myself for not toughing it out before we had the baby and it was just us two. I would've been done by now and undoubtedly in a better physical condition and mindset.
    GET OUT NOW!!!!!
I wish you well and the strength you need to kick. I've tried to read evrything I can find on remedies and ppl's experiences. I just read something about adrenaline and opiate's effects on the body's regular levels. Basically what I got was: don't try to sleep when your brimming with adrenaline. Go with it, stay busy, develop a productive habit/hobby and run with it.
I'm sure, like me, you want to know the oponent. Any info is good info in my book.
I too have just started to taper myself. This is my 3rd time @ bat.
In the past I've tried to do this silently. I'm now reaching out to a forum for support. Its hard to maintain tunnel vision, left to your own devices...thats why most of us are here to begin with I presume. Like my buddies Dr told him: if you were on a desert island suddenly you wouldn't die from withdrawl.
Stay in touch. Stay tough. I'll be around, and I hope you are too.
