    Default methadone weight gain?

First off let me honestly admit that Methadone was my doc for a long time even before I went to the clinic we would buy it. Before you get a tolerance it is super strong! Life went to hell after snorting oxy's was introduced. Too expensive and never enough.

My real question I'm wondering is if anyone else experienced weight gain while being on methadone maintanence? I was on it for about 6-7 months a year or so ago and both my husband and I gained like 20lbs... It was hard to loose. "They" say it doesn't cause your metabolism to slow it's just that "your not chasing" everyday. I don't buy it. So many people from the clinic had the same issue. I know it causes you to have a sweet tooth but gd. Just curious as to other's experiences.

Hi desiree, YES, methadone does cause weight gain. Seems even worse for woman. It effects your adrenal cortex which includes your thyroid. Many woman have to go on synthroid after being on it for a time.

The clinic will never admit to anything. This is due to sheer ignorance (very likely) or deception (also very likely). My husband still goes to the clinic. A short time ago he witnessed a state official there reading the riot act to the nurses because they are to report any deaths of their patients due to heart failure or respitory illness. A 52 year old lifer had just died. The official was accusing them of surpressing information and said that this latest death was the last straw and that they had been warned many times before. Take what you will from that.

Back to the weight thing...not to be unseemly but methadone also causes severe constipation and when things are not moving through our whole digestive and excretory system stalls out. I have been off for 7 months and my GI tract is still a mess. I have lost 15 pounds since I stopped and all I did was stop taking methadone.

    Hope this helps

Not to mention you start to like the taste of food again. Man, I gained 60lbs my first year sober and I can't get the damned weight off!!
Don't be afraid of withdrawal. The sick feeling will pass and then the real work starts: staying sober. For me, the rooms of AA were the last thing I tried and the first thing that worked, but it will only work if you work it.

Like a couple others who posted here, I have been on methadone for a while and have gained about 10-15 pounds. I am now 5.8 and weight 160-165 pounds. I have a Britney Spears stomach (you know when people thought she was pregnant?) Nobody has thought i was pregnant but.. I tried exercising and nothing happened. One week I got sick and didn't eat for a week.. guess what- no weight loss there either, which is very wierd for me, since before, if I had done that pre-methadone, I would have been 5 pounds lower.. at least temporarily! What is going on? Help!! I saw somebody else posted a question like this but no experts told them how to fix it. Thanks,

I too, gained a lot of weight on Methadone. I craved sweets, and the sweets combined with my high dose and lack of enough sleep, contributed to me getting Diabetes. My illness caused me to change my eating to habits to mostly a plant based diet, fruits, veggies, whole grains, nuts, and very little fat. I also gave up sodas, and fruit juice. I already was going for forty minute walks four times a week, so increased to one hour six days a week. It was a huge change, and within six months, I had lost fifty pounds, and got well below my pre-Methadone weight. All this while on 100mgs. That was nine years ago, and I've kept it off. Also I started a slow Methadone taper in October of 2009 at 100mgs and of this writing I'm down to 18mgs, and feeling good. No sickness, because of the slow rate of my taper. So, it can be done if you want it bad enough, and are willing to change your diet, and exercise. Same with detoxing, slow and steady, the slower, the better, and less chance of sickness. If I was sick, this would be so different, and so much harder.

I also put on a lot of weight on methadone, but I wasnt on a maintenance script, just after using for a couple of weeks I noticed a marked change (used it for 2.5 months up to now). I was 8.2 stones before meths (sorry UK measurements dont know lbs!) and now Im just under 10stones (for my height I should be 9.5 stones - so gone from being under weight to over weight in few weeks!!) I think its not just because of the meths itself, as its a missconception that because meths stores in your fat cells (therefore more so in women cos they have more fat cells than men) for a very long period, it actually creates fat, as it doesnt. In UK we have sugar free meths, and I assumed they changed it because of weight gain, but its due to rotting teeth apparantly (according to drug councillor). I dont know how much of an effect meths with sugar has on weight as opposed to sugar free, but nonetheless I still put a lot of weight on anyways even though it was meths sf. I know its because of how much more I ate. I ate and ate all day long, no exaggeration. I think the adrenal cortex comment above warrants some further invetigation, as that probably has a lot to do with it also. Maybe it encourages your need to eat more? Can a thyroid gland have this effect on you? But my weight certainly didnt come from nowhere, lets put it that way, I definately had a increase in appetite.

My weight gain came from 6 years of MMT eating nothing but choc ice cream candy sweets of any kind...I think most will say the same. :p

I went into the methadone clinic weighing 140 pounds and i was abou 6ft tall, i was strung out on heroin for 2 and a half years. I stayed on methadone for 3 years and now i weigh over 200 lbs. while on methadone i worked in oil fields which was physically demanding. I tapered down and am on my 12th day with out methadone. I have dropped almost 10 pounds. probably from loose bowels and sweating. Ive always been skinny my whole life, hope i can return to a healthy weight after this. But yeah when on methadone i craved chocolate like no other, had to have it like another drug. now i dont really want it anymore. I have seen people loose weight on methadone but they were habitually useing benzos and always pretty messed up, so maybe thats why. I think its a side effect of methadone to gain weight, im my opinion.
