Default using methadone for 4 days to get off heroin?

I've been researching rehab centers and this one i came across today uses an approach i never heard of. They would have me on methadone, but only for about 4 days, tapering it down each day until i'm detoxed from heroin. To me, this doesn't make any sense. Apparently they have a huge success rate, has anyone heard of or done this? (its at this rehab center in michigan called "A 4-ever Recovery") I've never been on methadone, but using one opiate to get off another, even if its just to help with the withdrawls, just doesn't sound right. Any thoughts? also, does anyone know of a good rehab center i can check out?

    Hi melissa,
Although i've never been in a detox center i can still offer u my personal experience. I hav ct'd off heroin many times using methadone. As long as its only used from 3-4days u won't get addicted to the meth and it will save u from all the acute withdrawals.Like u said u've never used methadone b4 so it takes some time to build tolerance to it so in 4 days u definately wont get a habit providing ur not taking excessivley stupid amounts which i assume u wont be in a clinic.Hope this helps....Rob

melissa, a really great rehab center is RiverSource in Mesa ,AZ. My daughter spent 30 days there and I am sure she would to give you details. She had an incredibly positive experience and they continue to help her now. She has made many phone calls to them to ask questions and ask for additional help and they respond each time. they have made an incredible difference in her recovery. Just send a personal message to kristin51981 if you are interested.

    Hi Melissa-

Congrats on your decision to stop the insanity, and pursue recovery. At the bottom of the page, in the center you'll see a section that rates rehab facilities. If you click on "See more programs", you're led to the entire list. Clicking on a facility will present you with a summary of their services. In fact Riversource, AZ. is listed. Even though this section is subjective (based on the experience of the reporting party) I'd say it's certainly worth a look. Please let us know how you make out with all this....

I used to use methadone to avoid acute withdrawal and it worked well, however I used that as an excuse to keep on using as I felt I could control my habit, that didn't last too long, but yeah if done correctly its about the most comfortable way that I've found to detox...

there are risk and benifits using methadone during detox
my experience is that sub. and meth are just to addicted to take for anything
i personally believe in the use of short acting opiates such as darvon to aid in the detox process
it was important for me to feel my detox, to walk through that hell
now, when i want to use, i remember how hard it was to get the stuff out of my system
most herion addicts that i know, self included, like the way methadone makes them feel, because at most doses it is much stronger than herion
so while you are in this detox facility, they will give you 4 days of methadone, this is enough to get a response from your body, you will hate it or love it, and if you love it, you will probably leave detox and drive immediatly to the methadone clinic
every single time i have tried to use methadone for a short time, i have ended up on it for months or even years
to me its a trap, i am sure that if you goto this detox and tell them you do not want to use methadone during detox they should work with you and explore other options
keep in mind i have alot of experience with this drug, and knowing what i have been through
i would not suggest that someone use this drug
you stated in your post that this does not make sense, i believe that you know the answer deep down in your heart you know how to do the next right thing.xoxo

I have used heroin that is much stronger then methadone lots of times so I don't quit agree with mtgoat but I have also used methadone to with draw and other opiates and there are lots of pharmasuticals you can use to address your addiction and as long as you quickly taper you can avoid acute withdrawl. On the subject of using darvon. I actually believe that due to the less euphoric nature of methadone or suboxone they can be superior, in my experience, to darvon. I remember when I was in a detox treatment facility, totally annihilated on benzo's and extremely ill, I saved all my darvons(under my tongue and into my pocket) for a few days and popped them all at once and got pretty high, so unless your absolutely determined to recover and going to stay as sober minded(no benzos) as possible during detox darvon might not be the best thing to have at your disposal, everyone knows how those second thoughts creep in constantly during a heroin(opoid, whatever) detox. But as with all methods it differs from person to person and with different circumstances, good luck, Peace...

I had a piss test once after taking darvon and valium and it came back hot for methadone and I asked the dr. about that and he said that darvon is similar to methadon compound I guess being a sinthetic and all.The last time I tried to kick I stopped methadone at 120 mills daily and started using dilidud 8's dropping 4 at a time and I just got worse from there stuck with the dillies and then started the peeler's 200 and 100 morphine. This is in canada so some of you might not know what I mean. the 100's are greys and 200's purple. They are time capsule morphine. I started using methadone to get out of prison this time in 1997. Big mistake. This time I am still out though and working with addicts and homeless people here in Victoria at a shelter. It is the perfect 12 step job for me and I feel really good about it. Andy
