Short term subutex taper from Percocet - thoughts?

Been in PM for four years. Have tapered down to a relatively stable 50 mgs per day of Percocet. Ready to begin a 12 day taper with subutex, starting next Friday, 1/28......last day of work for the week. Will be taking the next few days off of work for the holiday. I'm excited at the prospect of tapering the opiates, rather than doing a CT in a detox setting over a 12 day period. Excited at the light at the end of the tunnel of ending the Percocet/Oxycontin treatment and getting clean.

Looking for advice, what to expect during this 12 day taper (knowing I have to induce WD before beginning).

You are on a low enough dose of percocet 50mg to go cold turkey...but you mentioned oxycontin as well. Are you taking that at the moment too?

If indeed your total intake is 50mg, don't go on a sub!! It is the strongest opiate known to man at the moment...You would be upregulating your neurtransmitters, and then you'll really be screwed. Really, 50mg per day is a drop in the bucket when talking about withdrawals. You don't even need a detox. Ofcourse they will accept your money, but truly a few days at home, with some Clonidine, Imodium and perhaps some Melatonin and a few other things and it will be over before you know it.

I went from a 500mg Oxycontin addiction, weaned down over like maybe 5 days to 160-200mg and then just jumped. Many of us have done it this way, though if the mgs were in the hundreds, then I might suggest a detox, glad you aren't spending thousands on a detox, but 50mg is not that bad of a jump.

Most addicts can't wean...too tempting....PLUS it just prolongs the detox by weaning. But please....do not go on sub. For your own health and sanity, do not go on sub of anykind!!!! THAT you will have to wean off of hun. I can't belive any sane doctor would put someone on sub for 50mg of percocet....truly their licence really should be taken away. it is so obvious this 'doctor' is only interested in your money....sad to say.... And 12 days on sub???? Really? Seriously???!!!! And probably will give you a way too high of a sub dose too. But you do not need this....I hope you didn't give this doctor/drug dealer any of your money!

If you were to jump from 50mg, your WD would be really done by 4 or 5 days.
Any you want to taper for some days, then go on sub for another 12??? Man, these doctors really really pi$$ me off....to take advantage like that of your fears of withdrawing.....don't get me started!!!

Good luck!! We are here for you :) And we won't try and sell you swamp land either!

    hi zep
    Welcome to ODR!
i agree with carol. By the time you could start the sub you will be more than half way through the acute w/d"s. Do you feel you could taper down more on the perc's or even just jump from the perc's? Can i ask why you want to use the sub? Wondering if you have good information on sub & what you expect if you use the sub. What plans do you have to manage your pain once you are off pain meds?
Looking forward to hearing from you

Thank you for the responses. I have been off of the oxycontin for three weeks. Tapered about as much as I feel that I can with the percs. Was my intent to detox in a hospital setting and went through a very thorough interview process with the councelors at a very respectable recovery facility. I was opposed to sub initially but their thinking made sense. My research tends to confirm that, when used in a very short taper plan, subutex will greatly minimize the brutal, 5-7 days of wd's that will have me out of commission and in misery. Discussed with the physician that they referred me to, discussed with my PM doctor this week. PM opposed to suboxone but supports a brief subutex taper.......script is at the pharmacy currently. 30 doses of 2 mgs. I believe it is for 12 days - it may be for 10. I have a plan for 6 weeks of counceling and NA meetings at the direction of the recovery facility. This plan made complete sense and gave me some sense of "relief" that there would be an end in sight........

Please understand there is no magic bullet. If you take all that sub, you will end up paaying for it deArly. More than just jumping from 50 mg of Percs. Read pplz stories on here hun.
Going to NA is brilliant. You can start the meetings now. It will help a lot if U did start now. Trust me on this. U won'tt be sorry, if u R serious about getting and staying clean :). A word to the wise.

So wrong, if you only take Subs for 7-12 days is it worse, actually it is the easiest way to detox. Period. No 1 month -1year stuff or you where on it for who knows how long. 7-12 days is not going to cause massive withdrawals. If you taper over that time frame as the lady is doing there is no other way to decrease and almost eliminate physical withdrawals. Judging the mental and physical withdrawals by just using mg as a barometer is also incorrect. There are people who just can't handle jumping off 50mg of Oxy and others can cold turkey over a gram of heroin IV'd. Some people have other issues as well, lenght of use, anxiety, depression, other drugs, job responsibilities, etc. so 50mg for one can be totally different for another.
