Default taper off meth. or suboxone?

hi all :). i wanted to ask those of you who know if you think i would be better off tapering down totally off the methadone, or switching over to the suboxone, as my doc had suggested? i have been clean off heroin for 2 years, and on meth. for 3 now. i have tapered from 125mgs. down to 21mgs. and tht's where i am at right now. Any help/suggestions/advice will be truly appreciated.

    Welcome littlema
I was in a similar position to you - had been on methadone for years. Switching to sub was definately the best way to finally get off it. I found it alot easier to taper off the sub than off methadone. To make the switch, I waited till I was in early withdrawal from the methadone (about 30 hours after my last dose - the longer you can hold out, the better) then started on 4mg. sub. It's impt. your Dr knows not to start you on a high dose, as it will be less effective and might make you feel worse. Does your Dr have experience with prescribing sub (especially to ex methadone patients?)

Whatever you decide to do, good luck and keep posting.

    Lily :-)
PS I was on 20mg too when I switched to sub. You should be fine.

I switched just about a month ago littlema and lily it telling you the way it is. Wait as long as you can after your last dose of methadone. I got sick the first time my doctor tried to switch me and I had to come back and do it again. It finally worked. Good luck.

From what I understand, suboxone contains naltrexone, whereas subutex doesn't.

    Hi Geordie
Bup4 could explain this better, but...the buprenorphine in Subutex and Suboxone is a partial opiate agonist, which means it has some opiate effects, but also has opiate blocking effects, and can bring on withdrawal if other opiates are already in your system. I don't fully understand it either - weird drug! I guess the naltrexone, which is a full agonist, must have a greater blocking effect (so if you used over Subutex, you just wouldn't feel it...whereas if you used over Suboxone, it would put you into WD. I think?? Has anyone got experience with this?)

As for benzos - I don't know the answer to that one. I didn't know you weren't supposed to take them while on sub, although perhaps it's because they both have a depressive effect.

    Lily :)

    Dear John,

i need more info, how long have you been on methadone, how much, etc. Is you doctor saying your gonna step down off 30 mgs of meth onto subutex and do it in 3-4 weeks and then go off sub? I need to get your story straight to give you more information. I had a 5-6 year addiction to vicodin up to 40-50 per day toward the last 2 years, hugh addiction. I stepped off vics and stayed on suboxone for about 8 weeks and stepped off at .25 mgs. I have been clean from vics for 6.5 months and off sub for 4.5 months.

Depending upon how "bad" your addiction is and how long you have been an addict will depend on what you will feel like once you step off of subutex. I will tell you everything I can about what I went through...however...everyone is different and has different experiences stepping off sub.

stay away from benzo's if at all possible, I have a friend who is detoxing off of them and having one hell of a time at it, he already kicked opiates and now benzo's. They are nothing to mess with if at all possible. Let me know what I can do for you John. I am by no means an expert, however, I am clean and just went through detox so everything is fresh. I stay around the board to help others if I can and stay connected to them for myself so I never go back to drugs. Peace.

    Teri

First i have to congratulate u on been clean and staying that way i know i have done it and stay clean for a couple of years but when everything seems fine life has a uncanny way of dealing me some ****e hands.
If memory serve's me right i went on meth about mid feb this year after only been using for about a year on the brown before hand. I have been a addict for about 17 years on and off more on than off.
I started on 35 was no good then went to 45 mil still in pain but i could operate to a degree so i stuck it out for a while till i was stable then came down 5 mil at a time till now which is 30 mils.
Craving on the meth for me are insane so this way the decision for moving over to subutex cause of the blocker it has in it had to be made.
I know if i can get clean i will stay clean the last relapse was a in a way a unavoidable i know what u are thinking but i have my reasons. Put it this way i am sick to death of it.
I can handle most W/D but the creeps in the legs do me in and i do know to expect most things like been tired a lot loss of sleep and that when i do stop all together.
Its the switching over that scare's me for i have heard so many things and the doc's over ere have only just started using the stuff so they are green aswell
hope this will help u for i am getting more worried as time go's by for i do not want to lose my job or friends cause the doctor messed up the swap which will be nov the 1st

thanks teri for ur time i do appreciate ur help

    Dear John,

Hi!!! You may want to consider sub as a maintenance drug. I only used it as a step down drug so I dont have a lot of experience with it as a maintenance drug, but others on the board can maybe give you the pros and cons of staying on sub. Now I dont know much about the difference between subutex and suboxone. But I do know there is an ingrediant in suboxone that will allow you NOT to get high anymore therefore if you are on it you will train yourself NOT to get high anymore. They use long term sub for constant relapsers. I have only relaped once in my life so I felt that I only needed it a step down drug. The only other drug I have real experience with is pot.

I encourage you to look around the board to get some answers and have a good game plan. You may want to look at getting some theraphy as well, that is if you are looking to stay clean and not just get clean. I hope you are looking at the first senerio. Please stay in touch and let me know how you are doing. If you need any other information I will try to help you get it. There are several really knowledgable people on the board, Spring, Ashley, Bup4pain, and so many more. Ask questions and go for it. I wish you well my friend. Blessings and peace from US to Britian.
