    Default Subutex/ weight loss

Hello Everyone, I am new to the board.. I have been on subutex for a year and a half now and have had such positive results. I would say for the past six months I have been trying to find out if Bup can cause weight loss as a side effect. It is not listed on the Samsha web site , however I found this board through that web site and figured if anyone was to know it would be other patients that are on this treatment.. If this relates to anyone I would greatly appreciate it. I have noticed that since starting the treatment it was around the same time I started to loose weight. My pharmacist said that being that it is an opiate any opiate can have that type of side effect however it is not clearly stated in the Bup information.. Some of you may ask why am I on Subutex not suboxone and that is because I had an allergic reaction to the naloxone in the suboxone so my doctor put me on the subutex. Thanks in advance.

I was on Methadone for 3 years, in this time I gained around 30 or more pounds. Since starting Bup (suboxone) I have lost the majority of it. I noticed that with Methadone I had tremendous cravings for sweats, while on suboxone I have none.It is possiable that bup. may spead up a metabolism. But I am not sure about that. What I do know is that I have lost 28 pounds since starting Bup. Not to mention I do not sweat like a pig anymore. Bup. Is in my opinion 110% better than Methadone

Thankyou so much for responding to my post and if there is more of you out there that have had any experience or knowledge regarding my question please let me know.. I want to call the FDA up again and ask them if they are seeing this. I called maybe six months ago and really didnt get any answers. The pharmacists where I live really do not have a CLUE ABOUT BUP.. I dont get it being that technically this drug has been used for pain in the past however the pharmacists give very little info ( which their reading from the pamphlet that comes with the meds. My pharmacy has to special order the Bup for me and when calling other pharmacies to fill the script none of them keep it in stock and from what my pharmacist tells me I am the only one in my town on it and I have been on it for a year and a half.. I think the best way to learn more about this medication RE side effects etc.. is to share experiences with one another.. Thanks For Reading.. Kriss

I think it is individual. Seems like a few woman here gained water weight (swollen ankles bloated etc.) Some have lost and others gain.

The side effects and the packaging insert are mostly biased on short term usage of bupe. Long term usage of it has just now started. New info will no doubted be published. (like the re evaluation regarding the addictive nature of bupe which is now being looked at FINALLY!)

I gained a pile of weight getting off the stuff. (20 lbs) and am now finally getting rid of my w/d pig outs of ice cream chips while watching HBO to distract me from feeling like poop day after day.. night after night. Crunch munch yummie while the time ticked by ever so slowly.

Now I am eating right and out doing things. I'm sure I will be back there again like most of us some time. But for now I am doing my best to take care. My #'s are better but my hormones are still way low. Bupe shut down my testosterone production. I'm on HRT now.

Will try it for 3 months.. then stop. Hopefully I will recover from the damage the bupe has done by then and I will be healing enough so that I can get along w/o HRT.

Kris.. I too was on bupe for over a year.. (2 years) I am off now and regretting going on it long term, and am very interested on folks like you when ya decide to come off to see how you do.

Be grateful you are not like the 600 lb woman who's skin grew into the sofa. OMG!

    Be well!

My doctor was great as far as giving me the option and making it my choice when to taper off the Bup etc.. This is my situation, I have a terrible back.. I am only thirty two years old and when I say I have a bad back I should have had surgery when I was seventeen but long story short as to date I have not and probably wont.. My Bup doctor and I have discussed over and over again the pros and cons staying on Bup.. My doctor told me that when and if I decide to come of the Bup I need to see a pain management doctor for my pain. My doctor told me that one of the side effects coming off Bup is lower back pain and it could go away however in my case being that I ahve a pain issue it probably wont and he said that the Bup is also helping me right now with my pain and I would have to judge how my pain is when I am off and have a plan in action.. I expressed to my Dr. that all of the pain docs around here are pain meds or injections.. I do not want to mess around when it comes to my recovery.. I dont even think about Vicodin anymore. Bup saved my life. I am taking two 2mg tablets a day so I am really not on a very high dose I started at 4 tablets a day (2mgs) and would say I was on that dosage for close to a year then in December I went to three and it just became a habit of taking two so I have been on two now since January.. Sorry that I am going on and on.. If there is anyone out there though that is debating whether to start Bup etc I would be more then happy to share. I would like to here more about side effects being on Bup long term as well as if anyone sees any articles please e mail me so I can pull them up and read them..I am very happy that I have lost weight yet would be happier knowing that it is from the Bup and nothing else is wrong with me. Besides going to my Bup doctor who is a shrink I have developed a fear about going to see doctors so I basically stay away.. I know I am nutty thanks again for all of your replies..

I have gained 15 pounds on Suboxone! I envy you guys, I never ever had a weight problem before I started the sub. and now it doesnt matter what I do I cant seem to loose the weight. I, in the beginning noticed I was craving sweets big time, couldnt get enough icecream! When I couldnt fit into my clothes I knew I was in trouble, I am now on a diet pill and still cant seem to loose the weight. I hardly ever eat and its like it wont come off. This sub. is some weird stuff. I have been on it almost a year, Aug. 26, to be exact. I just wish I could loose this dang weight, feel lucky, most people I have talked to have gained also.

the sweets are normally associated with just about any member of the opiate family, but ive found the craving isnt quite as strong as with full agonist opiates.

oddly enough, ive lost about 20 lbs in the time ive been on suboxone.

ever since i've been on it i've completely lost my appetite... i used to have problems with slight anorexia, and then overeating from the cravings, basically weight obsession. i've spent years trying to suppress my appetite and now that i have none, i have no idea how to eat, so then i get so hungry i'm nauseous and then i REALLY don't want to eat.

also, i have the opposite experience regarding sweets. i used to have a sweet tooth, but now the only things i can eat are things with no sugar-- yogurt, no sugar cereal, fruit, bread. while i was working, i'd be out and see things that seemed appetizing, and buy them, but in the weeks between work and school, sitting around my apartment or walking around, almost everything i think of to eat makes me feel sick, so i haven't been eating at all, and i've lost 5 pounds in the past 3 days since work ended.

oh well, i suppose i shouldn't complain, except for the constant nausea. i guess heroin made me lose my appetite too, but it also made me not feel the hunger pangs so i didn't notice.
