OxyContin Treatment
OxyContin addicts have a palette of treatment options
available to them. One of the most common Oxycontin detox options is methadone
treatment. In a sense, addicts are
offered methadone to replace oxycodone as the “drug
of choice.” Since methadone is regulated
and available in clinics, and since methadone detox is a relatively inexpensive,
addicts can at the very least use the methadone detox stage as a jumping off
point for a more formal anti-addiction approach.
Another alternative OxyContin treatment option is going cold turkey or
“self weaning” from opioids. Doctors caution against self weaning for
several reasons. One, oxycontin withdrawals symptoms can emerge and create
medical complications. Two, physical
cravings and dysphoria may prove immensely
uncomfortable and may lead to relapse and a breaking down of will power. Three, statistics show that “going cold turkey”
tends to be rather ineffective.
Finally, OxyContin users may try
something called detoxification under anesthesia. This method involves close scrutiny in an intensive
care unit, and it has garnered mixed/negative reviews from diverse and
objective medical sources. The procedure
is viewed by some as dangerous, and stats suggest that it may not be overly
effective even at its primary mission of detoxification.
When surveying detox options, it’s important to keep an eye on the larger perspective. Breaking the physical oxycodone habit can be done with the help of medical professionals, but breaking the addictive cycle often requires much more probing efforts and a finer and more personalized array of tools.
